Misconception #3: I should wait until a month before my 65th birthday to get started with Medicare.

FALSE! It can be confusing deciding when and how to sign up for Medicare, but don’t put it off.

When should you begin the Medicare process? Probably sooner than you think. You can start up to 100 days before your 65th birthday. The seven-month time frame to sign up is three months before your birthday, the month of your birthday, and up to three months after your birthday. You will pay a penalty if you wait longer, unless you have creditable coverage from an employer, so you’ll definitely want to avoid procrastinating.

The exception to this time frame is for people already collecting Social Security benefits. If you are already collecting your monthly check, then you are automatically enrolled, and your Medicare card should arrive in the mail three to four months before your 65th birthday.
